Secondary Hemorrhage after Hemorrhoidectomy

Abstract

|
Delayed, or secondary hemorrhage after hemorrhoidectomy is a troublesome complication and it occurs in 0.2 to 4% of the hemorrhoidectomies. The nature of the bleeding is a diarrhea consisted of blood clots and dark blood. It usually occurs at the patients home between 7 to 14 days after the operation. Emergency treatment may include bed rest, suture ligation, and various forms of tamponade. At the Seoul Surgical Clinic in Wonju, 7 patients(1 1%) were seen with the complication of secondary hemorrhage among 642 hemorhoidectomies. The prevalent interval from the operation to hemorrhage was 10-13 days. Treatment modalities included Foley catheter tamponade in one patient, and observation and bed rest alone in
6 patients.
